On June 28th of 1992, the Bangor (Maine) Police Department responded to a call of a suspicious package inside the gated front entrance to author, Stephen King's property. A neighbor had seen the package lying unattended in the walkway which leads up to the main entrance of the mansion. The property is rimmed by the famous spidered and gargoyled gothic fence which also carries signs notifying the thousands of yearly visitors that an advanced security/surveillance system monitors the grounds for intruders.
Two cruisers responded to the scene and officers determined that the package was indeed suspicious in nature. At this point I received a phone call from the police department advising me of the situation, asking that I respond to the scene immediately. Who am I? Between, June 1991 and September of 1994, my company provided Protective Security Services for the King family. My name is Tim.
Upon arrival I made contact with the Kings inside the residence and coordinated their safety so that a Render Safe Procedure could be executed by the bomb squad. For those of you who do not know what this means, in basic terms, a Render Safe Procedure is utilized by bomb disposal units on site so that a suspect device can be examined and/or removed safely for detailed analysis. This procedure usually entails affixing a high explosive charge to the suspect device so that upon detonation the package and/or internal components are ripped in half or otherwise disrupted so that further inspection can be safely made. However, many times the internal components are completely destroyed as well.
While onlookers watched, the police detonated the package which lurched and jumped under the stress of the charge, bouncing off the ground and into the air. When the dust settled police approached the package and could see that it was a hard cover copy of one of Stephen King's books, titled "It." Police Officers and Firemen at the scene were amazed to see that the book was still in such remarkably good condition and joked about correlations that the book survived the blast because of the legendary spookiness and somewhat macabre aura of the house and grounds upon which it was placed. The book and other items inside the package were then removed from the scene and tagged as evidence.
After inspection of the other materials packaged along with the book it was later determined that someone (a fan/tourist) had placed the book inside the gate and left the area. A letter accompanying the book, and ripped in half by the explosion, was from the typical fan requesting (out of respect for his privacy) that he later sign the book and returned to them at his earliest convenience.
Several days later the book was released to me by the Police Department. I asked the Kings what they were going to do with the book and they said they did not want it. I asked if I may have it and they said I was welcomed to it. That was ten years ago. I have had it ever since.

This is truly a rare and one of kind item! I have worked Protective Security all over the world. I am not aware of anything like this ever happening to any person of celebrity status anywhere. Folks tell me this book will only continue to go up in value and that I should hold on to it. Well, ten years is enough! My teenagers are now young adults.
This auction includes the book "It," "fan letter, evidence envelope and police reports" which provide full authentication of the incident as well as the items themselves. Some pictures below help show the remarkable condition of the book after surviving the blast. All pages are in tact, with explosive residue on them. In fact, you can actually read the book from start to finish if you wished to. The covers were damaged in the explosion, with the front portion in tact and the back portion blown off in two pieces from the ripping effect of the charge. It's funny really! It has been many years since I last looked at this book. I still chuckle and am amazed how it made through the ordeal.
