The Road to the Dark Tower is the first critical analysis of Stephen King's Dark Tower series, examining each of the seven component books and the series as a whole, exploring themes and influences, tracing the connections that radiate from the Dark Tower into many of King's other works, including Salem's Lot, The Stand, Insomnia, Black House and Hearts In Atlantis, while illuminating the slowly unraveling mystery of the Tower, the Crimson King, and mysterious characters known as Breakers and low men.
The Road to the Dark Tower reviews the series' arduous journey to completion and explore how fan demand for the next book has been a source of both inspiration and frustration for King these past two decades. Vincent also studies the series' primary characters, arguably the most complex creations by an author already renowned for his skillful characterization. Because Roland, Eddie, Susannah, and Jake have been developed over a span of 4000 pages during a period of nearly two decades, changes in their natures can be attributed to both the narrative evolution of the story but also the changing perspective of the author. Sidebar discussions explore interesting bits of trivia about the series, and appendices include real and fictional timelines associated with the series and a glossary of Mid-World terms.
The Road to the Dark Tower examines the series in the context of King's complete body of work and explore the epic's place in modern fiction.
