Entertainment Weekly

Ab Juli 2003 schreibt King monatlich eine Kolumne für die letzte Seite dieser Zeitung:
"The King of Pop Culture".

Es wird behauptet, dass King pro Kolumne $5,000 bekommt, bzw. $60,000 pro Jahr.

King, however, says he wants to apply a lighter touch than what he uses in his dark novels.
"I think I'd like to be funny," said King. "In a short period of time, it grabs people more than anything else."

The August 8 issue
of Entertainment Weekly (currently on sale featuring a Queer Eye for the Straight Guy cover) launches King's "The Pop of King" column, which will deal with popular culture. The first
outing reads more like Larry King's stream-of-conscious USA Today columns. He sounds off on movies (he loved Terminator 3; liked 28 Days Later; hated Antwone Fisher and The Life of David Gale), music (he hasn't much use for pop music but enjoys Eminem, AC/DC, Metallica, Steve Earle and the Dixie Chicks) and books.

King said he believes that 70% of books on both fiction and nonfiction bestseller lists are "dreck," including Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. Elmore Leonard is, he writes, "the great American writer... but that he was a lot better 10 years go." He champions Stewart O'Nan, Peter Robinson, Peter Abrahams and the early novels of Dennis Lehane. He also praises Donna Tartt's The Little Friend (at the expense of The Secret History) and states, "I also believe that a book that sells a million copies--as The Dogs of Babel, by Carolyn Parkhurst, may eventually do--is not automatically trash."

EW's managing editor, Rick Tetzeli, promises King's dissection of movies, books, TV, music and more "will be opinionated, surprising, current, and passionate." King defends his passion for pop culture. "These are things I actually care about," he writes. "Consequently I will not be cute, dismissive, patronizing, or indulgent. I may make you angry--I hope I do make you angry--but I will not waste your time."
